South Bedfordshire Craftivists
We are a group of people engaged in using our craft skills to help work towards social justice. Craftivism is a gentle form of activism designed to create positive change. The term was coined by Betsy Greer in the USA in 2003, and picked up by Sarah Corbett in the UK (see more here)
Between us members cover 5 electoral wards:
Luton South and South Bedfordshire
Luton North
Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard
Mid Bedfordshire
Aylesbury
For our latest project we have created a series of 4 large pictures, that depict a war zone, entitled 'From Devastation to Hope'. Each picture shows the dove of peace ever present as a sign of hope at all times.

Our aim is to promote the stopping of wars and urge for peace at a time when war seems to be filling the news' headlines. We wish to encourage those with power and authority to change things and for the better of all.
We have produced postcards of the 4 pictures together and these are available (via the Office) to send to MPs and arms manufacturers as a protests against war. There is guidance for what to write to your MP here. Alternatively you may like to use them as prayer cards, and prayers for peace are available on our Prayers page.
Organisations which can provide further resources on the theme of peace, or who may be glad of your support are: The Peace Pledge Union, Peace Direct, Quakers, Peace Education and Peacemakers.
Our Lent 2025 project was making fabric tote bags for Leighton Linslade Helpers Commity Fridge, Luton Foodbank and Dunstable Foodbank who are struggling since plastic carriers became less available, as well as it being a more sustainable alternative. They will continue to need bags so if you wish to make some the instructions are available here. We also wrote to our MPs to ask what they are doing about food poverty as we would prefer to live in a country where food banks are not necessary because people have sufficient income to buy food for themselves and their families.

Our previous projects have been the Tent of Hope installation and accompanying act of worship (see Creation Care), making bags to gift to MPs to share our concern about the cost of living crisis, making green hearts to send to our MPs to register our concern about climate change, making model houses and tents to create a model town which featured as part of an open air service in 2023, and contributing a panel to the Stitches for Survival project to create a giant 'scarf' that wrapped around an area of Glasgow during COP26 in 2021.
